Would you like to take your studies further after your third year? Do you fancy continuing to study China? Would you like to make a start on the language?
If so, you might want to check out
Newcastle's MA in East Asian History. Based in Historical Studies, the
MA
includes a balance between advanced historical training, advanced study
of East
Asian history, and language training at the level suited to the
individual
student (including those who are starting from the beginning). There
are
options in East Asian history in the second semester, and in the third
semester
(the summer) students use primary sources (in translation or in the
original
language, depending on language skills) to write a dissertation on a
topic of
their choice. The modules on East Asian history are all comparative,
providing
opportunities to locate both China and Japan in their broader East
Asian
context.
For history graduates who begin with no
East Asian language, the programme provides a grounding in either
Chinese or
Japanese that opens up opportunities for further study in either China
or
Japan, and for scholarships to fund that study, as well as giving you a
distinctive skill that is likely to be increasingly attractive to
employers.
The MA also provides essential training and background for those who
wish to
continue to a research degree (an MLitt, MPhil or PhD).

programme with either Naomi Standen or Martin Dusinberre.
