Thermon: The Hellenistic Sanctuary
|
The spring chamber The abundant spring must have been a major attraction of the site and it was enclosed with fine masonry in the Hellenistic period. |

The stoas The strong fortification walls which enclosed the sanctuary at Thermon in the Hellenistic period did not serve to protect a settlement but rather the public buildings such as the series of stoas where the members of the Aetolian league met at regular intervals. Many dedications of bronze statues were made in the area of the sanctuary but only the bases remain today since the Romans removed them to embellish Rome after they had sacked the sanctuary. |
