Thermon: the Prehistoric Settlement

The lower walls of the Megaron were made with small blocks of the local limestone to a height of around 0.5m. Above this level it is likely that most of the upper structure was of timbers covered with straw or brushwood as suggested here. A slight inward lean can be detected in these stone footings which may have helped resist the pressure of roof. The other buildings, both rectangular and elliptical, have similar stone footings and, to judge by the depth of red clay reported by the excavator Rhomaios, at least part of the upper structure was of mud brick or clay plastered over branches.
